Harbor Cruises Start
Board the Madaket at foot of F

by Dalene Zerlang

The Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum's historic harbor cruise vessel Madaket began its 33rd season in June.

The wildlife is out in full force on Humboldt Bay, and the promise of fair weather is in the air. Egrets are nesting on Indian Island, and the pelicans have returned. For the duration of the summer, there is a daily opportunity to enjoy the season aboard the Madaket on a cruise of Humboldt Bay harbor.

From now until mid-September, the Madaket will depart from the Eureka Boardwalk at the F Street dock with 75-minute narrated cruises at 1 and 2:30 p.m. each day. An additional narrated cruise departs Wednesday through Saturday at 4 p.m. along with one-hour cocktail cruises at 5:30 p.m.

Launched June 6, 1910, the Madaket just celebrated her 95th birthday. The vessel has been plying the waters of Humboldt Bay offering narrated cruises and cocktail cruises since 1972. Before that she operated as a ferry launch carrying people to the plywood mills, pulp mills and a stud mill on the Samoa peninsula. Madaket and her six sister ships originally left from the F Street docks at 6 a.m. and ran continuously until 2:30 a.m., carrying more than 1,200 people a day. Famous for her age, the boat also has the smallest licensed bar in the state. In addition to the regular cruise schedule, Madaket is available for private chartered cruises for up to 49 people in the mornings and during the evening hours.

Adults $15, seniors or teens, $13; children $7.50. Cocktail cruises $10 all ages. The Madaket departs from the Eureka Boardwalk F Street dock. For reservations and further information call 445-1910.

Dalene Zerlang is manager of operations.
