Seniors Working
Our local senior employment program is number one - again!

by Ginger Campbell

The Humboldt-Del Norte AARP Foundation/Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) has been given honors as the number one SCSEP project site in California for the 29th year in a row, one of the top two in the nation. This project site placed 106 percent of its participants in permanent jobs this year.

SCSEP served 125 individual people this year. The program has significant turnover with people entering the program, being placed into a permanent job or withdrawing. The grant funds 62 people at one time. As soon as one person is placed, the program can enroll the next person.

The Title V Senior Community Service Employment Program is a federally funded employment program funded through the Older Americans Act and administered through the Department of Labor for people 55-plus who are on a limited income.  Twelve national contractors, including the AARP Foundation, receive these monies to run programs throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.  Once again the AARP Foundation is the top placement contractor this year with a national 53 percent placement rate of its participants in permanent jobs. The second closest national contractor came in at 27 percent, which is less than half of the placement rate of the AARP Foundation/SCSEP.

The SCSEP places participants into 501-C3 nonprofit and public agencies in temporary assignments while the program helps them transition into permanent part-time or full-time jobs. SCSEP participants must be able to take part in the program for the full  20 hours per week and be willing and able to look for work.

I feel that the success of the Humboldt-Del Norte program is because of local employers and their preference and willingness to hire mature, experienced and dedicated workers.

The program has been funded again for the 2005/2006 grant year. For more information, we invite potential applicants and employers to call 707-822-7027.

Ginger Campbell is project director of the local SCSEP and is also responsible for the project site in Sonoma County. She is the lead mentor-trainer for the national AARP Foundation/SCSEP for new project directors throughout the United States.
