Fortuna
Caregiver training set to meet growing demand

by June Crym

An ideal day in the life of Caregiver Services Resource Specialist Teresa Christian is when she has checked the registry database and found a caregiver for each and every person who called requesting in-home care. Is that an average day? Not yet. Why? Because there are always more people needing care than there are caregivers listed on the registry.

The registry lists trained and pre-screened caregivers available for In-Home Supportive Services assignments and private job referrals. The registry makes free referrals for seniors and people with disabilities who need help at home.

Each caregiver who lists with the registry must first complete a 33-hour, five-week caregiver training. These trainings are held throughout Humboldt County. Deciding where to hold a training depends on where the most requests for caregivers come from versus the number of available caregivers already on the registry in that area.

An increasing number of requests from Fortuna and Rio Dell led to the scheduling of the next caregiver training. The course begins in Fortuna on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. through Oct. 18. There is a $15 fee. Space is limited and pre-registration is necessary.

The final caregiver training scheduled for 2005 will be held in Eureka. Dates and times have not been determined yet. To pre-register for the Fortuna or Eureka courses, call Laura at 443-4363 or toll free, 877-977-1604.

June Crym is program assistant with Caregiver Services, a program of the Area Agency on Aging.
