Line Dancing - more pleasure than exercise
by June Davis

Fun, fun, fun. That's what instructor Al Weber's senior line dance is all about. But there are many serendipities as well.

First, the dancers - about 20 of us - are full of camaraderie while helping each other master the dance patterns. Second, medical research shows that learning new things keeps us young and smart. We have learned at least 18 new dance routines since Al has been teaching at HSRC, just over a year.

Third, line dancing burns calories so we can eat more. Fourth, if we don't eat more,
we may actually lose weight.

Fifth, Al is such a patient instructor that anyone can catch on to his precise demonstrations. Sixth, we learn new meanings of old words - box, vine, hitch, shuffle, ball change.

If you know what these dance terms mean, you should be here dancing Wednesdays at 1:15 p.m. If you don't know pivot from tunnel, you should come join Al's line dance class for the timing of your life, waltz, two-step, reggae, rock and roll.

You'll get a real kick out of Al, who donates two hours a week so other folks can socialize and improve memory, agility and health - all this while having fun.

June Davis teaches strength training senior exercise classes for Eureka Adult School. The line dance class also goes out into the community. For information, call 707-443-9747.
