Area Agency on Aging Helpful senior programs by Thea Gast Recently I attended my first Triple A Advisory Council (TACC) meeting in Sacramento with Victoria Onstine, immediate past president of our Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council. As current president, I have replaced Victoria as a director of TACC. Directors consist of presidents from each of the 33 California planning and service areas‚ area agencies‚ advisory councils, and up to three others. Meetings are held at least twice a year. The best thing about this day-and-a-half meeting was learning about three programs which are of great help to seniors. • SAIF, Seniors Against Investment Fraud, a program within the California Department of Corporations, recommends the following action before investing in any financial product: Call SAIF toll free (866-275-2677). Consider all your options. Compare the product to others. Consult with someone you trust. For more information, call 866-ASK-CORP or go to www.corp.ca.gov. • Senior Legal Hotline provides free information, advice and brief services to callers older than age 60 at 800-222-1753 or go to www.seniorlegalhotline.org. • Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs is a new program which provides objective information on effectiveness of prescription drugs, can help you open a discussion about drug costs with your doctor and can help you afford the medicines you need. This is a web-based, free service, although printed material will be available as studies are completed. The web address is www.crbestbuydrugs.org. If you don't have a computer, ask a friend or grandchild to print out the information on the drug you want to know about or go to your library or senior center computer room for help. Thea Gast is president of the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council. |
