Be prepared What's one bottle of water worth? by Linda Nellist How can a bottle of water help you? If you put it in your emergency supplies kit, it can be the first step in making a difference between comfort and discomfort. It can even be lifesaving in some situations. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian tsunami last December we learned that the lessons Red Cross has been teaching in Humboldt County have a local, national and even international message. Be prepared. We know that we are susceptible to earthquakes, tsunami and flooding among myriad disasters that might affect our homes. But we also know we can plan ahead for our own safety and comfort. I know many people have been thinking about it - but now is the time to do something. The simplest things can make the emergency situation more comfortable for us as individuals, but remember that you can also share extra supplies with others who are in need. Please start today. That bottle of water and a few other supplies may mean survival. Here is a basic list that everyone needs to have on hand in a small daypack or bag that can be carried if you have to leave your home in a hurry. And, if you can, duplicate these supplies in your vehicle just to be sure you have them if you are away from home when disaster strikes. • Water, one gallon per person per day • Non-perishable food (energy bars, ready-to-eat foods in cans or foil packets) • Pet food • Medications, three-day supply • First aid kit • Sturdy shoes for walking • Rain coat or poncho • Battery operated radio and extra batteries • Flashlight • Hand wipes • Phone card or coins for use at payphones If you have internet access, the Red Cross brochures are available in easy-to-print format at www.prepare.org. Information about emergency kits and supplies listed there and at www.redcross.org will give you a complete outline of what to do. More brochures are available at the Red Cross office, 406 11th St. at E Street, Eureka. Linda Nellist is Development Associate of the Humboldt County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 443-4521. |
