Quit that puffin' Join the Great American Smokeout Studies show that quitting tobacco not only saves people's lives, it can benefit the whole community. Businesses save around $3,391 every year for each smoking employee who quits. People who smoke a pack a day can save themselves about $1,600 each year by quitting and greatly reduce their risk of getting heart disease, cancer, emphysema and asthma. Families benefit, too, by no longer being exposed to secondhand smoke. The Great American Smokeout (GAS) is on Thursday, Nov. 17. Started in 1976 by the American Cancer Society, the GAS focuses on helping tobacco users quit for at least one day and possibly for good. This is a great opportunity for people to gain the benefits of quitting smoking or chewing. People who don't smoke can "adopt" tobacco users and help them through their quitting process. • Locally, GAS materials and activities will be available to everyone. • Tobacco Quit Kits. The American Cancer Society, 2942 F St., Eureka, and the Humboldt County Public Health Branch, 529 I St., Eureka, will be giving out free kits all week starting Nov. 14. • Free Quitting Tobacco Class 6 p.m. Nov. 16 at the American Cancer Society. • Businesses, medical offices, dental offices and schools will give out Tobacco Quit Kits. For information on how businesses or individuals can take part in the GAS, or to find out more about how to quit tobacco, call the American Cancer Society at 443-2241 or the Department of Health and Human Services, Tobacco-Free Humboldt Program at 268-2132. |
