Artists' Reception by Alison Book Please come to the reception for "With Hearts and Hands," an art show featuring works by local residents with Alzheimer's disease and other brain disorders, on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 3-5 p.m. at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center, 1910 California St., Eureka. The reception is free and open to all. "With Hearts and Hands" highlights the work created by clients at the Alzheimer's Day Care and Resource Center in Eureka. The center's art program was developed this year through a grant from the North Coast Cultural Trust. The art show will be on display at HSRC weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during November, which is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. While memory loss is the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, its victims also lose ways to communicate their thoughts and emotions. Art provides a vehicle for Alzheimer's patients to express their past, their feelings and their sense of self. The creative process also helps people with Alzheimer's experience feelings of accomplishment, self-respect and joy. Note cards featuring artwork by local Alzheimer's patients will be available for sale at the reception. All proceeds from the note cards and artwork sales benefit the Alzheimer's Day Care and Resource Center. Alison Book is the events and communications coordinator for the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. For more information, call 444-8254, ext. 202. |
