Area Agency on Aging names Senior Friends
by Donna Chambers

The Area 1 Agency on Aging honored three individuals and three
organizations in November for their contributions to seniors in Humboldt and
Del Norte counties.

Tim Austin and Dave Pedrotti were selected to receive Senior Friend awards
at the agency's 25th annual meeting. Both epitomize the spirit of
volunteerism.

Tim Austin is a longtime volunteer driver delivering meals to
home-bound seniors, first in San Francisco and currently in Redway. He is an
active volunteer who helps each week on the front desk at the Healy Senior
Center as well as with other needs in his community. Tim was nominated by
Marilyn Yelle, who describes him as "a cheerful, helpful person who loves to
help others."

Dave Pedrotti has been active in the community for a number of years,
volunteering for a range of organizations. Dave demonstrates his commitment
to improving the lives of others by delivering meals to seniors, visiting
elders in their homes or care homes and helping behind the scenes to honor
other senior volunteers. Dave was nominated by Leslie Lollich, who describes
him as a volunteer who "is one of the first to get there and one of the last
to leave."

The members of the Rotary Club of Eureka were honored for spearheading
the "No Senior Goes Hungry" campaign. In collaboration with the Humboldt
Senior Resource Center, Rotary Club of Eureka focused time, energy and
dollars to address the issue of hunger among home-bound and frail elderly
people in the greater Eureka and Arcata areas.

Soroptimist International of Humboldt Bay was honored for their ongoing
efforts to increase community awareness about Alzheimer's disease and raise
funds to help improve the lives of people with Alzheimer's.

The Adult Protective Services unit of Humboldt County received the
Commitment to Senior Service award for its dedication and integrity in
working to protect and improve the lives of frail, at-risk elders.

Area Agency Board President Nancy Gregory presented the President's
Award to Assemblywoman Patty Berg for her ongoing commitment and dedication
in advocating for seniors at the local and state level.
