Fortuna
Home Delivered Meal program grows

by Tara Sanders

We have been fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Rose Perenin
Foundation to increase our home-delivered meal services in Fortuna for the
next five years.

The Senior Nutrition Program began serving meals in Fortuna in July
2004, after St. Luke Manor ended its program in this community. The Senior
Nutrition Program's home-delivered meal service was small to start - only 10
participants were receiving five meals a week.

But the small program continues to grow, thanks to community
partnerships that have produced additional funding for meals in Fortuna.
Donations received from the Eureka Rotary partnership have enabled services
to increase to serve 12 homebound seniors.

Still, the need to serve more seniors exists in Fortuna, and the grant
from the Rose Perenin Foundation will allow the Nutrition Program to serve a
total of 25 participants seven meals per week. The foundation is committed
to carrying on Rose Perenin's wishes to serve elders in the Fortuna area.

If you are interested in donating to the Home Delivered Meal
program, donations can be mailed to Home Delivered Meals, 1910 California
St., Eureka, CA 95501. For home-delivered meal referrals, contact Cheri at
443-9747, ext. 256.

Tara Sanders, R.D. is the Nutrition and Activities director at the
Humboldt Senior Resource Center.
