Caregiver training planned in January
by June Crym

Training is required for anyone wanting to be a part of Caregiver
Services' registry for job referrals.

You might ask, "Why do I have to take 33 hours of caregiver training before
I can get on the registry? All I want to do is a little house cleaning, some
cooking and maybe errands. Why must I sit through five weeks of training on
personal care and other subjects I never deal with?"

The answer is simple. Caregivers who complete the training are better
prepared to handle problems that might arise with people in their care. You
never know when the person you are caring for may slip and fall or pitch
forward in the wheelchair. A client might need help getting in and out of
the car.

Caregivers sometimes need to know how to comfort someone who has severe
memory loss. You may have clients or family members with dementia or
Alzheimer's disease. Careful instructions on how to handle these situations
and more are covered in the training.

Whether you are a family caregiver or an in-home care worker, the training
also provides a good place to share experiences and receive support from
fellow caregivers and class instructors.

The next free training will be held in Eureka in January. Space is
limited for these popular classes and preregistration is required. Call
Laura Patterson at 443-4363, toll-free 877-977-1604.

The Caregiver Services' registry lists trained and pre-screened caregivers
available for In-Home Supportive Services assignments and private job
referrals. The registry makes free referrals for seniors and people with
disabilities who need help at home. Caregiver Services is a program of the
Area 1 Agency on Aging.

June Crym is the program assitant for Caregiver Services.
