New Year changes - HSRC is a good place to play
by Kim Laney

Things are changing at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center this year. My name is Kim Laney, and I am the new Activities Program coordinator in Eureka. I am enthusiastic about providing more activities, classes and a variety of informative workshops.

I have been talking to seniors who frequent the center to get input and feedback on the great services we already provide. Suggestions and ideas are always welcome, and we will try to accommodate the requests we receive.

I have been part of the HSRC team on and off for the past 15 years in the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Though I am not a native of Humboldt County, I often claim to be one, since both my children were born here. Originally from Southern California, I have lived here for more than half my life. I have been married for 20 years and have two children, ages 10 and almost 13.

My hobbies include reading, gardening, skiing and playing and coaching soccer. Come by and ask me about our mini-farm where we raise goats, sheep, chickens and rabbits. Of course we have a dog and cats, too.

At HRSC we will continue to offer the existing array of classes from Exercise with Thea to Bridge on Fridays. The center is a great place to meet for lunch, get together with friends or meet new people. One of the most popular classes we offer is line dancing every Wednesday. You can get up and dance - no partner needed - or sit and listen to toe-tapping music.

We have a computer lab open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. - be sure to check for schedule changes on our daily activity schedule posted throughout the building. If you need one-to-one training, give us a call and we will try to match you up with an experienced teacher.

We have several language classes. Our friendly and knowledgeable instructors will help you improve your existing knowledge base or start from scratch.

If you like to play card games, chess, checkers, cribbage or backgammon, the dining room is the place to be Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10 a.m. After the games, stay for a hot meal and an afternoon movie, or come to the new watercolor class.

There's so much to do at the center, it's a great place to play.
