Area Agency on Aging: Get nomination petition now for California Senior Legislator elections to be held in April

People age 60 and older are being recruited to serve as candidates for two positions in the California Senior Legislature. Candidates should have an interest in issues affecting older people, a willingness to find solutions to problems, the ability to work with elected officials and the ability to travel. The CSL is composed of 120 members - 40 senators and 80 assembly members.

The CSL election will be held during the first week of April throughout California. The Area 1 Agency on Aging is responsible for the conduct of the selection of one senior senator and one senior assembly member for the combined Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The term of office is from October 2006 through October 2010. Registered voters age 60 and older are eligible.

To get on the local ballot, candidates must submit a nomination petition that contains the signatures of 25 local residents age 60 or older who are registered voters. Petitions are available at the A1AA office, 3300 Glenwood St., Eureka; at the Del Norte InfoCenter, 1225 Marshall St., Suite 22, Crescent City; or by calling 442-3763 to request one. The nomination petition must be returned to the Area Agency by noon, March 17.

The CSL meets annually in Sacramento for a five-day session to develop legislation in response to needs and concerns of California's elders. Partial travel costs are reimbursed by CSL. Senior legislators work throughout the year to find authors among state legislators and to advocate for adoption of the priority legislation chosen at their annual session.

For more information on becoming a candidate for CSL, call Chris Martinek or Donna Chambers at 442-3763.
