Beginning March 7 - Living more comfortably with disabilities
Tri-County Independent Living will offer its new Living Well with a Disability program beginning in March. The Living Well program, developed specifically for rural areas, is a health promotion or wellness training program for adults with physical disabilities. Some people can develop psychological complications related to their primary disability, as well as pressure sores, obesity and physical de-conditioning, poor respiration, mobility problems, and chronic joint and muscle pain. "One of the barriers for rural Americans with disabilities is a lack of access to health education programs that teach people how to protect their own health and well-being," said Chris Jones, Tri-County Independent Living's executive director. "It is our goal to help teach people the skills they need to generate solutions to these health care needs." The Living Well program is an eight-week, 16-hour workshop using goal setting and problem solving to develop healthy lifestyles. Workshops concentrate on developing tools and skills for healthy living, including healthy reactions and communication, managing depression, information seeking, physical activity, nutrition and advocacy. Participants report improvement in outlook and positive changes in daily activity, such as new recreational pursuits or returning to school. Many learn they can pursue meaningful goals despite limitations, and finally, a sense of belonging develops as participants feel accepted and encouraged by peers. Tri-County will offer this workshop beginning Tuesday, March 7. The program will be held each Tuesday for eight consecutive weeks and will meet in the conference room at the Tri-County Independent Living, 955 Myrtle Ave., Eureka. Each session begins at 1 p.m. and runs through 3 p.m. Workshops will be limited to eight people. There is no fee for this class if you have a disability. However, we ask that if you join the class, you commit to attending all eight sessions. If you are interested, call Tri-County at 445-8404 to sign up. |
