Calling all gardeners
by Danna Bates

We need help. One of our biggest fundraisers for the senior center is our annual plant sale held throughout April. The success of the sale depends on your participation. Prices begin at 25 cents and increase with the type and size of the plant.

First - we need plants. It is important to have plants at a plant sale, don't you think? We take all kinds of plants - indoor, outdoor, large, small, climbing and creeping. If you need a larger pot to bring your plants in, we have a few. Just come pick them up at the senior center. Many people get creative with the variety of potting receptacles. Please label your plants and indicate the type of care needed to thrive.

Second - we need volunteers to help with the sale. No experience is needed. If you are someone who has some knowledge of plants it would be helpful in answering questions. Regardless of your age or level of experience, your help will be an asset to the success of our sale.

Third - we need people from the community to come to the senior center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and buy plants. The plant sale is open to the entire community. So if you enjoy new plants, the McKinleyville Senior Center is the place to be during April.

Remember, The McKinleyville Senior Center depends solely on the generosity of our community. Our center receives no funding from the county, state or federal government. Our funding comes from your donations of cash, plants, used books, puzzles and items for our 25-cent table. It is through you that we are able to provide our seniors with the many programs they enjoy and the assistance to ease their lives.

Please call 839-0191 if you are able to help. The addition of plants and flowers make our community a prettier place while making money for our senior center. Everyone wins.

Danna Bates is director of the McKinleyville Senior Center.
