Area Agency on Aging Public hearings reveal issues
Del Norte
by Chris Martinek
The Area 1 Agency on Aging held a meeting March 1 at the Crescent City Fire Protection District to receive community input on the development and coordination of services to benefit older Del Norte County citizens. The meeting was chaired by Supervisor Sarah Samples.
Attendees identified:
- The need for earthquake and tsunami evacuation and disaster preparedness, including a safety education program and transportation away from disasters for homebound and those without transportation as well as a system for checking on homebound seniors and adults with disabilities.
- The need for adult day health care services.
- Need to publicize the R-U-OK program (phone call service to check on seniors) available through the Del Norte InfoCenter, 464-7876.
- Need to develop a way for volunteers to provide transportation to those needing services.
- Importance of medication management programs.
- The need to provide and install smoke detectors.
- The need to develop a visiting program with a focus on people older than 85.
Humboldt County
by Barbara Clark
The Humboldt County public hearing was held at the Main Library on March 3 and chaired by Supervisor Bonnie Neely.
Issues included:
- The need to utilize transportation systems already in place and to hold a transportation forum and to increase the accessibility of public transit in the Eel River Valley.
- The need to expand services along Hwy. 36, especially transportation services and home delivered meals.
- The growing erosion of dollars available to federal, state and local senior services that will require more private dollars to meet needs and more public and private coordination to deliver services.
- The need for the entire community to handle the growth in the senior population in the next few years. Funding will stay the same while demands for services will go up.
