Area Agency on Aging: Try riding the bus now that gas prices are so high

Many seniors are reluctant to use public transportation because of a lack of understanding of the services that are available. The Area Agency Advisory Council's Transportation Committee is planning short presentations on public transportation and a bus ride in different areas around the county. The hope is that seniors and adults with disabilities would feel more comfortable using the bus system when they learn how to do it.

The Humboldt Transit Authority and city bus services will make a presentation of approximately 20 minutes to explain basic information on riding the bus, routes, schedules, purchasing tickets or passes, brief description of alternative transportation for those unable to ride the bus, followed by a short bus ride to familiarize participants with bus protocol.

At each event you'll find basic information for riding the bus, bus schedules and a free pass or bus ticket.

The dates and locations for "Ride The Bus Days" are:
  • McKinleyville, Thursday, May 25, 10:45 a.m., McKinleyville Senior Center at Azalea Hall, 1620 Pickett Road;
  • Willow Creek, Thursday, May 25, 1 p.m., Caregiver Services at St. Joseph Community Resource Center, 38883 Highway 299;
  • Arcata, Monday, June 5, 10:30 a.m., Senior Lunch Site at Arcata Community Center;
  • Fortuna, Friday, June 9, 10:30 a.m., Senior Lunch Site, Meadow View Village, 2130 Smith Lane;
  • Eureka, Tuesday, June 13, 10:30 a.m., Humboldt Senior Resource Center, 1910 California St.
The Area 1 Agency on Aging's mission is to provide leadership and guidance in supporting an older person's ability to lead a dignified, safe, healthy and independent life. The A1AA's Advisory Council, in its capacity as a senior advocate, has established its Transportation Committee to look at the needs of seniors and adults with disabilities as they transition to a non-driving status.
