Play ball! Humboldt Classics Senior Softball wants you
by Arthur Jones

April and May are Senior Softball signup months. Men who will be at least 50 years of age or older during the calendar year of 2006 are eligible to play in either the 50s or 60s division, depending on your age.

Presently there are five teams in the 50s division, representing Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata and Blue Lake; and five teams in the 60s division. The season starts around the first week of June and goes through most of August, with most games being played around 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The games are competitive, organized, professionally umpired and subject to the modified rules of the World's Championship Senior Softball organization out of Sacramento. The cost averages around $35 per player unless you play for a sponsored team. In addition, there is a 60s, 65s and 70s traveling team that competes with teams from southern Oregon in tournaments once each month.

If you are age eligible, interested and want to have fun, fellowship and competition in an active and organized league, or know someone who might be, please contact John French, 442-2050, for more information.

Prospective and present league members are working out daily at 6 p.m. at Freshwater Elementary School, weather permitting. Call John to confirm.

Art Jones plays in the senior league and also plays in the traveling team. His e-mail is bluelakeacj@humboldt1.com. --
