Rural representation: Eureka man named to California Commission on Aging
by Donna Chambers

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) recently announced the appointment of Thomas D. Rowe of Eureka to the California Commission on Aging. The commission was established under the Older Americans Act of 1973 and serves the state as the principal advocate on behalf of older adults.

Rowe, 58, is a partner in the law firm of Stokes, Steeves, Rowe & Hamer, where he has practiced law

since 1990.

The 25-member commission is a key advisory body to the governor, the legislature, and state, federal and local entities on issues affecting older Californians.

"Speaker Nunez made an excellent choice in selecting Tom Rowe to serve on the CCoA," said Sandra Fitzpatrick, executive director of the California Commission on Aging. "His professional background and his community service involvement will make him a valuable commissioner."

Rowe has served on the board of the Area 1 Agency on Aging since 2002 and is vice president of the board. When asked about his appointment, Rowe said, "I'm pleased to have been appointed, and I look forward to representing the rural perspective as a member of the commission and to working for a better quality of life for all older Californians."

Rowe earned a bachelor of arts from U.C. Santa Cruz, went on to study business and accounting at Humboldt State University and later earned a doctorate of jurisprudence from Hastings College of Law. He is a member of the Humboldt County Bar Association as well as the taxation, law practice management and technology, and trusts and estates sections of the State Bar.

In addition to his association with the Area Agency on Aging, Rowe has been involved with a range of groups, including Humboldt State University President's Advisory Board; North Coast Legacy/Leave a Legacy; Six Rivers Planned Parenthood; the San Francisco Senior Center; and the Humboldt County Boys and Girls Club.

Donna Chambers is executive director of the Area 1 Agency on Aging.

Rowe is the second Humboldt County representative on the Commission on Aging. Jim Davis of Eureka was recently appointed to the seat formerly held by Mary Dennison.
