HumGuide - Web Guide to Humboldt County

Web sites provide a preview to the North Coast
by Sharon McKinney

Summer travel on California's North Coast is a trip to paradise. Many visitors come to escape the heat, the big cities, the crowded theme parks and to spend time in nature's beauty. There is nothing as refreshing as an ocean breeze or to lie on the ground and look up to the top of a redwood tree.

This year, with gas prices causing all prices to rise, some people are opting for vacationing at home. So, for those with computers and Internet access, I am offering some vacations for the eyes and imaginations.

  • http://groups.msn.com/vintagephotosofdelnortecounty/crescentcity.msn This is a site put together by local photographers and hosted by Sandra Nuss that will give you time travel into Del Norte County history. The site will also give information about present features and statistics.
  • www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/recreation/smith-river/ Here you go to the Smith River National Recreation Area, a protected part of the county that offers camping, fishing, trails and pure nature. Take a vicarious hike to Bear Butte Basin [www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/photographs/album/?id=0002], or take a kayak trip down the Smith River [www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/photographs/album/?id=0013].
  • www.northcoastnature center.org/ Here is the way into the Nature Center. Take your children or grandchildren along for this educational experience. Lots to see and it's a hands-on place. There are kits and games to bring home.
  • www.nps.gov/redw/ No trip to this part of the state is complete without a visit to the awesome redwood forest. So here you go, and if it's too hot where you are, here is a soothingly cool picture too. A walk in the redwoods will also soothe the soul.
  • www.wildriverfishing.com/ For you anglers out there, here is a memorable fishing experience and a wonderful jet boat trip.
  • www.northerncalifornia.net/our_history.cfm This is a site for Del Norte information. Since you are saving money by doing your vacationing by Internet travel, there is an opportunity in October to take a helicopter trip to St. George Reef Lighthouse. The only way to get there is by air at $170 per person. It is a wonderful trip to see the reconstruction work and tour the facility. For more information, call 464-8299.

Let your fingers do the traveling this summer. See you there. Sharon McKinney enjoys taking her dogs to run in the wonderful community park alongside the bay in Crescent City. Her e-mail is shay-jay@charter.net.

If you don't have Internet access at home, check with your local senior center for opportunities to use their computer labs.
