Humboldt Classics Senior Softball: There's a new kid on the block
by Jack Nash

The 2006 season of the Humboldt Classics Senior Softball Association is nearing the halfway point, and it's obvious there is a new dominant team in the 60s Division. In its third year of sponsorship by the Blue Lake Rancheria, the Rookies have proven that they have arrived. When Senior Softball split into two divisions in 1998 the team then known as Kentucky Fried Chicken was a league doormat. They finished last in the league four times in the first six years.

Then in 2004 with a few roster changes, the Blue Lake Rancheria Rookies caught fire. They finished that year with the opposite record of the Kentucky Fried Chicken team from the year before, 20 wins and four losses as compared to four wins and 20 losses in 2003. They then went 15-6 in 2005 and are undefeated so far this summer. Congratulations to all the Rookies.

Additional congratulations need to go to Babe's One For The Road in the 50s Division for their continual dominance at that level. Entering the league in 1999, they have been near the top of the standings every year, winning or sharing the league title the last five years.

The Humboldt Classics Senior Softball program is open to all players 50 years and older (divided into two divisions, over-50 and over-60) and has been a staple of the local sports scene for the last 14 years. Players looking for more information can call Art Jones at 668-5644 or me at 442-2823.

Jack Nash is president of the Humboldt Classics Senior Softball Association.
