Del Norte STRONG classes
by Sharon McKinney

For many years, Jackie Brixey led water aerobics at the Endert Pool in Crescent City. She stopped the day her husband, Kenneth, had a stroke.

For a year and a half, Jackie stayed home to care for Kenneth and then began to take him to the Del Norte Senior Center, hoping he could participate in the STRONG exercise program. At that time, the exercise program met twice a week and was led by Shawn Burke, a therapist from Northwest Physical Therapy.

Jackie asked to be trained by the physical therapist, who was too busy to conduct the class any longer. She met the challenge and added a day to the weekly schedule. The group started with five or six people and now has 35 to 50 regulars.

Stories about improvement in balance, important to preventing falls, ability to climb stairs without a banister, becoming more flexible following hip surgery, having more endurance, bringing up the metabolism and circulation and other testimonials to the individual progress are eagerly shared by the participants.

Any person and any age and any physical condition can benefit from exercise. Older people need to keep and improve endurance, physical strength, and balance. The group provides social activity, mutual encouragement and laughter.

The class meets at the Del Norte Senior Center, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.
