Fortuna-Feeling dizzy? Feeling tired? Maybe it's your pills by Meryl King Put all your prescriptions, vitamins and everything else you take into a brown paper bag. Bring it to Brown Bag Day at the Senior Dining Center in Mountain View Village Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A health professional will find you the information you need to take your medicines safely. Fortuna Senior Services is sponsoring this event as part of its Wellness Lecture Series. The lectures usually occur before senior lunches on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. This program is especially long to give each person individual help. Dian Clem chairs the ongoing program which is a part of Fortuna Senior Services goal to provide programs to enrich and empower the lives of the senor community living in and around Fortuna. Like all of the wellness lectures, there is no cost for this program. The Brown Bag Program One alarming statistic is this: Medicines have become the fifth leading cause of death among seniors. As we get older we take more prescription and over-the-counter medicines. We suffer more from such chronic illnesses as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Many seniors experience problems that are caused by interactions of drugs they take. Many of us know people who seem to be confused or dizzy. Often this is caused by a reaction to or interaction of the medicines they take. The Kris Kelly Health Information Center will provide each senior with information about the pills in his or her brown bag. They will use words that are easy for people to understand. Meryl King is a writer for the Fortuna Senior Services program. Her e-mail is redwood5@cox.net. Wellness Lecture Series Oct. 11, the Area Agency on Aging will talk about the program designed to prevent falls. Nov. 8, Nancy Sheen will speak on "Search for Health Information on the Internet." |
