Senior softball: World champ gets his ring
by Art Jones

After playing in seven world's championship senior softball tournaments in the past ten years, I finally earned the right to wear a championship ring after the State Roofing Royals 70s+ team from Redwood City won the AAA division in Kent, Washington in September.

The Senior Softball USA-sponsored event featured championships in age brackets ranging from 50s+ through 80s+ in skill levels from super majors to AA. As a member of the Royals for the past nine years, I helped my team by performing at an all-tournament level, garnering the MVP award for my efforts.

I was hoping to be the first senior player from Humboldt County to win a ring, but I'll settle for being the first 70- year-old player. Last year, two members of the 50s division of the Humboldt Classics Senior Softball Association, Barry Oliver and Mike Yancheff, won rings while members of a team from Chico.

I also play as a member of the Blue Lake Rancheria Rookies in the Humboldt Classics 60s division, for the Let's Play Ball team in the 50s division, and as a member of both the 60s and 65s traveling teams who compete with teams from southern Oregon.

I led the Royals in home runs, triples and RBIs, hitting a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the last inning in the championship game to win against Cornwall Plumbing from Michigan, 10-9.

In late September I went on the road again to play in the Winter Nationals with the California Gold Rush 70s+ team, enroute to participate in the World's Senior Games in St. George, Utah as a member of the local Humboldt Classics 65s+ the first week, then with the State Roofing Royals from Redwood City in the 70s+ team the second week of October.
