Think About It
Foul weather driving - getting to your destination safely by Melanie Johnson

Winter weather has begun and with the season comes rain - lots of rain in Humboldt County. Car crashes nearly double during poor weather, but there are a few simple things you can do to reduce your chances of a rainy weather car crash.

  • Slow down.
  • Turn on your headlights. If weather requires your windshield wipers to be on, your headlights must be on. It's the law in California.
  • Do not use cruise control.
  • Increase following distance. While the three-second following distance rule is recommended for ideal driving conditions, it is advisable to increase the following distance to four or five seconds during foul weather.

These tips come from AARP's Driver Safety Program.

January classes

If you want to learn ways to be a year-round safer driver and save money on your auto insurance, take AARP's Driver Safety course. Volunteer instructors have scheduled classes for January 2007:

  • Crescent City, Jan. 10 & 11, call 464-5740
  • Eureka Adult School, Jan. 16 & 17 and Jan. 27, call 441-2448

Happy holidays and safe journey.

Melanie Johnson is an AARP Driver Safety instructor.
