Listen to the newspaper
Reading Service radios available in January

by Joan E. Sikkens

You may have heard recently about the Reading Service of the Redwoods switching its method of broadcast to an FM sub-carrier on KHSU. If you know any RSR listeners, let them know that pre-tuned radios are available for their use.

Think about the features we would miss if we were to lose sight or mobility and couldn't read or turn the pages of our many newspapers with community calendars, letters to the editor, obituaries, editorials, advice columns, horoscopes and the details of local events.

Reading Service of the Redwoods was created because of the tremendous need for access to local printed information. For several years, RSR volunteers have read local newspapers on the air for those who are vision impaired, including Senior News, heard on the first two Tuesdays of the month at 11 a.m.

RSR listeners currently hear live newspaper readings each weekday at 10 a.m. on KEET-TV's Second Audio Program channel which will continue in addition to the new service. Because that SAP capability is often absent or difficult to locate on televisions, KHSU-FM has partnered with the reading service and will donate the exclusive use of its sub-carrier with time for expansion of RSR programming. RSR will not interfere with the regular KHSU broadcast.

A special pre-tuned radio will be necessary to hear the RSR programs, but it will be simple to use. Listeners merely turn on the radio and push the sub-carrier button already tuned to Reading Service of the Redwoods. RSR recently purchased pre-tuned radios to loan to an initial group of more than 100 listeners, thanks to the Mel & Grace McLean Foundation, the Union Labor Health Foundation and Eureka Rotary.

KHSU and KEET engineers worked in November and December to complete the installation of the necessary broadcast equipment, funds for which were donated by the Green Diamond Resource Company, Senior Citizens Foundation of Humboldt County, Redwood Coast Music Festivals and others. Local Lions Clubs are busy raising funds for more radios and broadcast equipment.

If you have friends or family members who are unable to read printed information, let them know about the Reading Service of the Redwoods. It can be of great benefit to the visually impaired, as well as those with long-term illness or conditions such as stroke or Parkinson's disease.

Please pass along the information to those you know in assisted living facilities and people working in the health field. Call RSR at 443-0884 to find out where you can pick up a receiver application. Or download one at www.rsraudio.org, www.keet.org, or www.khsu.org.
