Where will you live?
Take a class about senior housing
by Bud Tillinghast

One of the courses being offered to seniors through the Osher Life-long Learning Institute of HSU will cover Senior Housing Options. The class will meet the five Thursday nights during March from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the new HSU boathouse (921 Waterfront Drive), on the Waterfront to the west of the Adorni Center. Cost is $30 for OLLI members and $40 for non-members. Instructors are me and my wife, Kathleen.

There are options in the community provided for seniors. But these days, people in retirement are tending to take their future more into their own hands. So this course will also cover options by seniors, including:

Aging in Institution. Members of the class will become familiar with the various facilities for seniors provided in the county like Sequoia Springs, Timber Ridge and Pacific Health Care. On-site visits will be scheduled.

Aging in Place. Possibilities will be discussed for seniors to remain in their own homes with social services brought to them. The class will hear from a member of Village Keepers, who are organizing this plan for people in Trinidad.

Aging in Community. In addition to a listing of available senior apartments, the class will learn of some of the newer options being explored where seniors live next to other seniors. One form of this is cohousing.

A member of Assemblywoman Patty Berg's office will present "Building an Aging Agenda," a document produced by the state Committee on Aging that Berg chairs. On the first night we will try to organize car-pooling for those who have difficulty driving at night.
