How to leave in a good way
Evolution has equipped us with an instinct to live that fuels a most intense fear of death and dying. In our culture this denial is managed mostly by avoidance. Technology has provided medical breakthroughs to assure a long life.
"Leaving Life: Things to do before leaving life" will include discussions of the effects your leaving will have on others, quality of life and how to reduce suffering. Dr. Patrick Dawson, the Medical Director of Skilled Healthcare Group, will talk about these unmentionables Tuesday, March 6, at 1 p.m. Dr. Dawson represents more than 600 long-term care residents. He is well known for his work with seniors throughout Humboldt County. This event is brought to you by the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.
Valley of the Giants
Arlene Hartin, a volunteer from the Clarke Historical Museum, will be at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center to talk about Peter B. Kyne, author of The Valley of the Giants. The movie based on the book was filmed in Humboldt County. This presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15.
Get support for depression
A new Depression Support Group with Henry Willey will meet every Tuesday at 2 p.m. Join a caring, supportive group of peers for an open, free and voluntary meeting. This is an important step on the road to wellness.

Private Medicare Plans
Have you been hearing about the privatization of Medicare? Have you received information about private Medicare plans in the mail or been contacted by an insurance agent regarding purchasing a private Medicare plan? Are you confused?
The Area Agency on Aging Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program will answer your questions in a free presentation about private Medicare health plans available locally. The tax assistance volunteers from AARP are here Mondays from 1-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-noon and Fridays from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. in the Computer Lab.
Second meeting
The new Diabetes Support Group to be held Wednesday, March 28 at 10 a.m. is facilitated by Margot Julian. The first hour is a talk with a question-and-answer period on specific topics related to diabetes, and the last 30 minutes gives everyone a chance to get to know each other and share their stories and offer each other support.
Bless the Beasts
Animeals is a new program that reaches out to seniors who need help feeding their pets. Bless the Beasts, the Humboldt Senior Resource Center and Petco are working together to provide free pet food for low-income seniors. The food distribution date is Thursday, March 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room.

The Book Group meets Wednesday, March 14. The group is reading The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd and also A Country That Works by Andy Stern.
