Seminar series
June 14 launches Sheriff's safety seminars

by Sharon McKinney

In our newspapers and newscasts we learn about the crime rate, the dangers in our neighborhoods from drug-related activities and the loss of police protection due to budget cuts. It is up to us to learn all we can about how to protect ourselves and each other.

By learning the signs of drug use and how to recognize drugs and their effects, we can be an important link to solving the problems. Beginning June 14, the Del Norte County Sheriff's Department will sponsor a three-part seminar on subjects of interest to seniors, elders, caregivers and everyone interested in learning how to be part of the solution.

At 1 p.m. at the Senior Center, 1765 Northcrest Drive, Crescent City, the topic will be drug and alcohol abuse and the negative effects on families, friends, and the community. Illegal drug use is responsible for wrecking family life and bringing domestic crime to our neighborhoods. The presentation will include descriptions and examples of illegal drugs so the participants can recognize them. The emphasis will be on marijuana, methamphetamines and alcohol abuse.

The senior center will provide refreshments and door prizes for this free seminar. Later in the summer two more informative lectures will be given. One will be how to protect yourself against identity theft, and the third will be aimed at protecting elders against personal crimes such as physical or financial abuses. Please plan to attend these important seminars.
