Rural transportation
Quail bus service is in jeopardy

by Mish Lewis

Once again we find ourselves in a pinch regarding the Quail bus. This year Humboldt Transit Authority, which operates the Quail, gave us a renewal contract of just one year. Unless we can generate more business for the Quail, we will lose it.

The schedule is designed to get people to Eureka, Fortuna, Garberville and Redway for medical appointments and other errands. If you schedule your appointments in the north for Tuesdays and those in Southern Humboldt for Friday mornings, the Quail can get you there.

Currently the Quail is the only means of public transportation available to seniors and disabled people in Southern Humboldt. With the price of gas going up, it seems that more folks would be interested in using it. It is the only public transport that we know of that will give you door-to-door service from your home.

In addition to riding the Quail, which is the best solution, you can donate to the Quail through the Healy Senior Center. Please help us save this valuable resource.

Mish Lewis is the executive director of the Healy Senior Center.

Quail schedule & fares

• Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, ride to and from Healy Senior Center for lunch, $2 round trip.

• First and third Tuesdays, Eureka, $6 round trip.

• Second and fourth Tuesdays, Fortuna, $5 round trip.

• Fridays, shopping and errands in Garberville and Redway, $2 round trip.
