OLLI The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Humboldt State University is hosting an open house on Saturday, July 28 from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka. HBAC is located just south of the Adorni Center. If you’d like to engage in stimulating, fun, interactive classes and open doors to new friendships and opportunities, come learn more about OLLI. Supported in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation, OLLI is a vibrant learning community offering a variety of affordable classes for adults older than 50. The open house will be a chance to learn more about upcoming fall classes, to meet instructors and tour our new venue. Everyone is welcome. Get started before the open house One OLLI class will immediately preceed the open house. Artist Calvin Jones will present A Celebration of African-American Culture Through Fine Art, Murals and Narrative History the same day, July 28, from 1-2:30 p.m. at the HBAC. At age 73, Calvin Jones continues to “portray on canvas a true picture of the black experience from his unique perspective” in spite of being legally blind since 2006. His paintings have been exhibited in Nigeria, Senegal, Spokane, Dallas, San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Of the nine murals created between 1976-1990, most are still a part of the culture of the neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago. Jones’s bold designs and vibrant colors address issues of identity with symbols of the forces that connect us all. He reveals the deep traditions of Black America — the family, respect for women, vibrant colors and complex patterns, beauty in the human form and inner strength of character. Jones will present his work and share his experiences as a muralist, illustrator and painter.
