Del Norte County The Del Norte Community Wellness Center is now open — after nearly 10 years of effort by the Del Norte Healthcare District, Open Door Community Health Centers and with the openhearted support of the city, county, College of the Redwoods, Area 1 Agency on Aging, First Five and many other social service providers in Del Norte County. The Community Wellness Center’s new location, 550 E. Washington St., was selected for its proximity to the Del Norte Senior Center, social services, public health, Sutter Coast Hospital and for its potential for future location of other health and social services. The first occupant is the Del Norte Community Health Center, commonly known as the A Street Clinic. The clinic opened for services at the new location on Tuesday, June 26. Del Norte Healthcare District has as its primary focus the health of the citizens of Del Norte County. The district has provided space rent-free since 1992 for the operation of the A Street Clinic. The Healthcare District has also maintained the building and grounds. The impetus for building the new Del Norte Community Wellness Center was the need to provide adequate space for the clinic to meet the demand for its services. It provides comprehensive primary care services to anyone in the community. Medical and dental services are provided on a sliding scale based on ability to pay. Staff members help patients sign up for programs that pay for medical and dental services, medications and supplies. Additional agencies to move in Area 1 Agency on Aging’s Del Norte InfoCenter and the office of the Del Norte Healthcare District will soon join the Community Clinic. The InfoCenter is a one-stop information and referral service center designed to connect residents to health and human resources in and out of the county. Programs within the Del Norte InfoCenter include Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), Senior Information and Assistance (I&A), Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Volunteer Center of the Redwoods as well as community outreach and education. The Del Norte Community Wellness Center will continue to add services as they are identified, and its partner agencies will work together to effectively leverage scarce resources for the benefit of the people and community in Del Norte County. An open house will be held later in the summer. Norma Reynolds is executive officer of the Del Norte Healthcare District. She can be reached from 9 a.m. to noon at 464-9494 or e-mail dnhcd1234@aol.com. |
