Firewood vouchers The Humboldt Senior Resource Center will once again offer low-cost firewood for seniors beginning July 16, and the wood lot will open Aug. 4. HSRC collaborates every year with the Humboldt County Sheriffs’ Work Alternative Program (SWAP) to provide this service. This program is for seniors 55 years and older who have a household income in the low-to-median range, based on the federal poverty guidelines. Families are allowed to purchase three cords of wood at the beginning of the season. • Eureka – vouchers will be sold daily beginning July 16 at HSRC, 1910 California St. from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. • Arcata – vouchers will be sold Aug. 14-Sept. 25 on Tuesday mornings at the Community Center from 9-11:30 a.m. • Fortuna sale dates will be Fridays, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. • McKinleyville sale dates will be Wednesday, Aug. 8, 12:30-2:30 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 28, 12:30-2:30 p.m. • Redway – vouchers will be sold at the Healy Senior Center on Wednesday, Aug. 8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. HSRC will continue selling vouchers until the wood is gone. The wood is mixed varieties cut into 16- to 18-inch lengths. No wood can be purchased at the wood lot and no choosing of wood. Additional cords may be available in late October. Because of counterfeit money scams, we will not accept $100 bills. Also, in order to keep traffic to a minimum, the last Saturday of each month will be reserved for missed appointments, so if you miss your assigned pick-up date, you may only pick up wood on the last Saturday of each month. Your seller can discuss pick up dates with you at the time of voucher purchase. Also, it is a good idea to bring a calendar if you are planning to pick up the wood yourself so that the date you are assigned will work in your schedule. You may send a friend or relative to purchase your vouchers. The following information needs to be provided at the time of purchase: they must know your age, your personal and household income information, full name, address and telephone number to purchase vouchers for you. We require a signed statement attesting to your household income. The wood is loaded for you at the lot, if you are picking it up yourself. Your vehicle and trailer must be sound, safe and secure to avoid spillage. We also have a handout with the names of deliverymen who will pick up and deliver your wood for a fee. All drivers charge the same rates, as shown on the chart. HSRC would like to extend our appreciation to the Sheriff’s Department for its continued support of seniors in our community. The SWAP wood lot is in Eureka behind the old General Hospital. You’ll find a map on your voucher. (Note: the SWAP wood lot in Fortuna is for storage only and is not staffed; wood cannot be picked up from that lot.) Kim Laney is HSRC’s activities coordinator. |
