Grand Jurors still needed by Allan Edwards If you are a senior who would like a meaningful way to serve your community, the Grand Jury of Humboldt County extends an enthusiastic invitation to become a member of this distinguished and vital part of our government. At this time, the Humboldt County Grand Jury needs a few good volunteers to fill positions as alternates to the jury. We know your wisdom and experience will be an asset if you are selected to serve. The qualifications are outlined by law: you must be a citizen; a resident of the state and of the county for one year immediately before being selected; in possession of your natural faculties; of ordinary intelligence; of sound judgment; of fair character; possessed of sufficient knowledge of the English language; be free from any convictions while you may have served in office or any felony or other high crime; and not currently serving as an elected public officer. Service on this Grand Jury extends until July 1, 2008, at which time another jury will be assembled. Punctual attendance is required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, three hours and seven hours respectively. Occasionally there is some light homework (reading, editing, writing). The Grand Jury is part of the judicial branch of government, charged with investigating county, city and special district governance matters as a part of the checks and balances that characterize our democratic way of life. Also, the members of the Grand Jury are charged to work with various committees to produce an annual report of findings and recommendations for the court, the board of supervisors, and the public we serve. As a member of the Grand Jury, you would help make our county a better place by assuring that government officials serve the public as required. You will receive a small stipend and a mileage allowance. You will also have a life-enhancing experience. If you are interested, you may write to: Grand Jury of Humboldt County, 825 5th St., Eureka, CA 95501-1153 or call 476-2475. If you prefer to communicate via e-mail, you can contact the Grand Jury at GrandJury@co.humboldt.ca.us. Allan Edwards is a member of the 2007 Grand Jury. |
