Going Mobile
October is Mobility Month — learn about riding the bus
by Julie Sessa

With a low rumble, the large bus pulls up to the stop and hums as it kneels to curb level to pick up Mim. Destination everywhere. Mim is going mobile today. The bus resumes its route.

Going Mobile events will be offered throughout the month of October during Mobility Month. The events, held at local senior centers in Arcata, Eureka, McKinleyville, Fortuna and Garberville, offer the opportunity to explore transportation options for those who don’t drive or choose not to drive. The Area 1 Agency on Aging, Humboldt Transit Authority, HCAOG transportation operators and community sites have collaborated to hold these events.

The events will have a transportation specialist to explain routes, fares and features of the bus and includes a short ride to experience Going Mobile. Information about transportation options will be available. Seniors, caregivers, people with disabilities and other members of the public interested in exploring transportation are invited to attend. Door prizes and vouchers will be available.

Eunice, another avid rider, enjoys knowing she is not polluting by driving a car. “I count on the very careful and caring bus drivers to get me places safely.”

New buses are more energy efficient, have more room to maneuver and are easier to get on and off. Another new feature is a Trip Planner. Using the arcatatransit.org, redwoodtransit.org, or the eurekatransit.org web sites, the computer will suggest routes and times to get you to your destination.

Mim urged, “Get a monthly pass. Go here, then there. All good things are connected on the routes. The week I moved to Eureka, I took the Purple and Red routes and learned how to get to the grocery stores, the food bank, senior center and classes at the adult school.” When asked why she likes buses, Mim replied, “I just don’t know where to begin. You are not going to believe it all.”
