Blood draws
Take advantage of St. Joseph’s offer

by Danna Bates

For those who made taking care of yourself a priority this year, I hope you will take advantage of our annual Health Fair blood draws sponsored by St. Joseph Hospital. There will be a few changes this year.

Last year six sites offered eight dates for blood draws. This year there will be three sites and six dates. The sites will be McKinleyville, Eureka and Fortuna. This year each center will have two dates.

• The McKinelyville Senior Center will offer blood draws Thursday, April 3, and Thursday, April 17, from 8 until 11:30 a.m. Appointments: 839-0191.

• The Humboldt Senior Resource Center in Eureka will offer the blood draws Wednesday, March 19, and Wednesday, April 23, from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Appointments: 443-9747.

• The Fortuna Community Center, 2301 Rohnerville Road, will offer blood draws Sunday, March 30, and Wednesday April 9, from 8 to 11 a.m. Appointments: Rhonda, 725-1166, ext. 201 or 213.

Three tests will be offered — the CBC and blood chemistry panel (requires a 12 hour fast) for $50, the PSA (prostate specific antigen) for men is $25 and the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) costs $30. These tests are offered at a huge savings. If you were to go to the hospital the CBC and chem panel would cost $341, the TSH would cost $116 and the PSA would cost $116, not to mention the $25 venipuncture fee to have your blood drawn.

Blood draws are done by appointment. To make an appointment call one of the three centers and please be ready to give the following information for each person having tests done: the name of tests you want done (CBC/chem panel, TSH, PSA), the name and gender of the person being tested, the date of birth and phone number.

Danna Bates is director of the McKinleyville Senior Center.
