New telephone scam targets elders and senior
centers:
He claims that seniors are due a $60 rebate for paying their Social Security taxes and then asks the victim to reveal his or her Social Security number and health benefit information. Someone who obtains this information could use it in a variety of ways to harm the victim. The Social Security Administration has stated that no such rebate exists. Also, the Humboldt Senior Resource Center says that no one representing them is making any such calls. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up without giving any information and then report the call to local law enforcement. Seniors who have questions about this or any other scam should call Senior Legal Services at (707) 443-9747. Lynne Page is staff attorney with Senior Legal Services.
