For excellence-HSRC receives leadership award
by Roz Keller

The Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) has received the 1999 Award for Excellence presented by The Management Center, a leading resource for nonprofit management support in Northern California since 1977. Each year this award is given to two nonprofits which have built solid records of success and community service based on long-term management excellence.

At a recent Bay Area luncheon, HSRC Executive Director Mary Beth Wolford was presented with a $5,000 check in recognition of the agency's innovative and effective management strategies and ability to maximize resources. Attending with Dr. Wolford were HSRC board members Marilyn Forsell, Diane Jenkins and Bob Lorensen, staff members Roz Keller and Maggie Kraft, and Sandi Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Area Agency on Aging. HSRC was selected from 30 nonprofit nominees in Northern California and is the first agency in Humboldt County to be selected.

One of the management challenges described in the award application was HSRC's year-long process of relocating the Fortuna Adult Day Health Services (ADHS) program. This included locating a new site, securing a $265,000 loan from the state of California to begin remodeling, obtaining $275,000 in grant funding to repay the loan and continue construction and completing the project in time to move the program to its new location by the deadline.  The achievement of this remarkable feat was a demonstration of HSRC's outstanding management practices and team cooperation.

We thank Mayor Phil Nyberg of Fortuna who signed the application in support of our nomination. Thanks also to Valeta Reynolds, long-time participant at the Fortuna Adult Day Health Services program and Betty Diehl, board member at the Bertha Russ Lytel Foundation, for contributing letters of support needed for our application.
