Happy new millennium
by Rachel Windsong

I've been mulling over what I actually do know.

If Y2K problems occur, they will not just happen one day and be over. They could go on. We will have the unknown hanging over our heads for months. The material of our lives may not be torn asunder, but there are likely to be broken threads here and there; and we won't know just where the next one might break from day to day. Nor will we know quickly whether it is just a thread or enough that it requires a patch and of what size.

But, we are prepared.

Some good things have happened in preparing for uncertainty. Our emergency people, just back from a week's intensive training by FEMA, are talking and working together as never before. Whether the emergency is Y2K,
an earthquake or just an ongoing condition of improved community communication, we will all win from the enhancement of their skills and their improved cooperation.

As a community we have learned more about how we work. The numerous presentations by government and business representatives have given us insight into who has responded in a timely manner to a possible problem and how.

If you've particular questions you need answers to, feel free to call the place connected to your question. People in every organization are happy to help you.

Police: Suzie Owsley, 441-4321

Fire: Pam, 441-4000

Red Cross: John Gladding, 443-4521

Office of Emergency Services: Dan Larkin, 268-2500

I say, keep your food and water stashes handy-we still live on a north coast that can be cut off in a storm.

I say, happy new year. See you next millennium.
