Senior Housing
Garberville's Cedar Street Apartments

by Patti Rose

The Garberville Senior Apartments project has been awarded a State of California's Department of Housing and Community Development HOME Investment Program grant of $799,400. The project has seen many ups and downs in the five years of grant writing and negotiations, but the commitment of this funding will make construction possible this year.

The project will be located next to the Jerold Phelps Community Hospital, the County Library and County Services Building at the end of Cedar Street in Garberville. Six existing apartments will be demolished in order to make room for the construction of 31 new apartments.

Southern Humboldt Senior Care, Inc. has partnered with the Lutheran Home for Aging of Humboldt County in sponsoring this project. The Lutherans bring ten years of experience in managing affordable senior housing. Many community organizations and businesses have contributed to this project over the years, and the level of community support has helped in raising the funds for these apartments. Fundraising and grant writing will continue even as construction begins on phase I.

To put your name on the waiting list or to make a donation, call 923-2275.

Patti Rose is executive director of the Cedar Street Senior Apartments.
