Housing I&A
by Marianne Nix

Seniors in north coast communities need housing. It is one of the top questions asked when calls come in to Senior Information and Assistance (I&A).

Senior I&A's mid-year report states that 22 percent of all of those calls were from seniors of low income seeking housing options. Forty-five percent were from seniors looking for moderately priced housing.

Clients came to our office in desperate need of subsidized housing, and we found ourselves with very few options to present. Waiting lists are long, and turnover is infrequent. There is no question that Humboldt County needs more low income housing.

Seniors of moderate income will find themselves with another housing option in Arcata when Humboldt Bay Housing Development opens its 30-unit senior housing complex in August. In addition, the now-open Alder Bay and soon-to-open Timber Ridge assisted living facilities in Eureka will increase the housing options for local seniors and those wishing to relocate here. For seniors in the market to buy their own homes, Foxwood Estates in Cutten is a gated community now available for seniors.

Marianne Nix is the manager for Senior I&A, a program of the Area I Agency on Aging, 442-3763. The Senior I&A program is available to assist developers as they explore the need for various levels of housing in our community.
