Building Bridges with the City of Eureka
by Mary Beth Wolford

A long-awaited event occurred Sept. 17 when Eureka Mayor Nancy Flemming gave Humboldt Senior Resource Center Board President Joanne Heinrichs the key to the old Washington School that houses the center, representing the building's sale for one silver dollar. The City of Eureka had formally agreed to the sale in August.

The silver dollar was appropriate as we move toward our 25th silver anniversary year in 1999. The dollar was dated 1902, the year the school was built. Joanne Conzelmann, our Linkages program manager, provided this dollar from her family in memory of her late father, Chester R. Jacobson.

Mayor Nancy Flemming was kind enough to return this dollar to us so that we can frame it, along with the key, to be forever displayed in our lobby.

Owning this building will provide us with additional opportunities for seeking grant funds. Funding sources view agency ownership as a positive point in the application process. A nonprofit corporation, we will now be responsible for the on-going maintenance and improvements for this building. Some major projects will need to be funded such as new roofing, exterior painting and a new floor in the kitchen area. Funds for these important projects will be obtained through a capital improvement fund program which will be launched in January 1999. The "Class of '99" will be formed and major donors will become members of this class.

Our building is an historic treasure for this city and county. It is one of the few remaining square schoolhouses in our state. As we restore this structure, many more people will begin to appreciate the history represented at this site, and may become interested in using programs and services provided at the Senior Resource Center.

It's all about building bridges.

Mary Beth Wolford, Ed.D., is executive director of the Humboldt Senior Resource Center.
