Dial-A-Ride - What's happening?
by Rachel Windsong The second in an ongoing series of Dial-A-Ride meetings was held at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) in August. Mary Beth Wolford, HSRC's executive director, chaired the meeting. To lend their expertise were Mayor Nancy Flemming, councilwomen Connie Miller and Maxine Hunter-Meeks, Marie Liscomb representing the City of Eureka, and Skip Arnold from Yellow Cab which operates Dial-A-Ride. In the audience were a number of Dial-A-Ride riders, present to hear reports on activity since the first meeting that was held in June. Marie Liscomb distributed results of the telephone survey she had made to learn about riders' problems. Though her survey had found some problems and complaints, the overwhelming opinion was that Dial-A-Ride is providing a much needed and appreciated service. Skip Arnold spoke of the financial problems he works under and how, because low wages prevent him from keeping good drivers very long, service slows every time new dispatchers or drivers must learn their jobs. He also explained how the service works, and that sometimes misunderstandings create unrealistic expectations. The group discussed the possibility of some kind of notification system so riders would know the rules and changes. Mayor Flemming pledged the city's cooperation. She said she would assign staff members to work on the issues. Councilwomen Miller and Hunter-Meeks expressed their concerns and cooperation. In a later phone conversation Fleming said she would appoint a task force if the staff couldn't solve the problems. The next meeting will be in November to hear the progress the City is making in solving problems. A notice of time and date will be in the November paper. Please join us.
