California budget provides increases for aging programs
by Sandi Fitzpatrick California's budget for fiscal year 1998-99 provided the first substantial funding increases for aging programs in nine years. Overall the budget allows for the creation of an "infrastructure" throughout the state whereby each Planning and Service Area (PSA) will receive support for state funded programs. The budget provides for a 50.6 percent increase in Older Californians Act funding. Also Adult Protective Services received an additional $20 million and Caregiver Resource Centers received an additional $4 million. Our local PSA includes the counties of Humboldt and Del Norte. Federal and state aging funds in the two-county area are administered by the Area Agency on Aging (AAA). The AAA will receive new funds for two stipended volunteer programs. The Foster Grandparent program matches senior volunteers with at-risk young children and the Senior Companion program matches low income elders to provide companionship to other senior citizens. In addition, the AAA will receive funds for respite services and Alzheimer's support services. Sandi Fitzpatrick is deputy director of the Area Agency on Aging. For information, call her at 442-3763.
