Senior Olympic Games
by Earl Johnson

Senior Olympics are held throughout the year in every state with men and women (age 50+) participating in more than 25 different sporting events. Some of the events include Track & Field (the most popular), swimming, tennis, golf, basketball, softball, bowling, cycling, archery, road race, horseshoes, racquetball, badminton and table tennis. Nationwide, more than 600,000 seniors from all 50 states, Canada and Mexico take part in the competitions.

All competitors compete by gender and age categories (five-year increments). You need not be an expert to participate in the Senior Games. All activities are open to beginners and novices, as well as accomplished athletes. Fitness at any age is what the games are all about.

In addition to the events, Senior Games also usually contain social events, health fairs and various activities as well as a great way to meet people. They are a lot of fun!

If you are 50 years of age or over, have a zest for life and fellowship, desire to enjoy good health and are interested in participating in future games, please telephone The National Senior Games Association at (225) 379-7337. E-mail nsga@idsmail.com

The Masters

The Masters level is devoted exclusively to track and field, long distance running, and race walking for men and women over age 30. Master meets are sanctioned by and sometimes sponsored by USATF (USA Track and Field) the national governing body for athletics in the US. Some are sponsored by individual, clubs or other senior organizations.

A current USATF card ($12-$15 per year) is usually required to compete. Call 317-261-0500 for information, and they can give you the local number to contact for a card. There are no qualifying standards for most athletic events. A subscription to "The National Master News" is invaluable for information-it is the official world and US publication for the events. The NMN phone number is (818) 760-8983 for subscription rates. Web site: www.nationalmastersnews.com
