Lifelong Learning - Senior College Is Off and Running!
by Diana Gates The Humboldt Senior Resource Center is proud to announce the opening of a center for lifelong learning, dubbed "The Senior College" by the program's steering committee. According to its mission statement, the Senior College "is designed to meet the educational needs and desires of people over 50 years of age, regardless of background or experience." This is not a new idea, of course. Similar institutions have sprung up all over the country. College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University have many students in this age group. However, the Senior College "strives to provide stimulating, timely, and informative classes and groups that take the senior perspective into account. In addition, the College intends to serve as a forum for the expression and documentation of the insight, wisdom and experience that are the byproducts of a long and varied, full and interesting life." (from the Mission Statement) Courses will fall into one of two tracks: Extension courses taught by faculty of the College of the Redwoods and Mastery of Life courses taught by community members who volunteer their time. All interested people are welcome regardless of educational background. One course in each track will be offered at a time; costs will be kept to a minimum. In September "Debt Free and Prosperous Living" Mondays, Sept. 13, 20, 27, and Oct. 4; 4:30-6:30 p.m., Conference Room. $45. This is a College of the Redwoods Continuing Education course, and will be taught by Mike Killian. The seminar teaches participants how to pay off ALL debts, including a mortgage, in five to seven years with money already earned; how to operate on cash 100 percent of the time; and how to begin to build wealth instead of debt. All attendees will leave with a complete debt-elimination plan. Students are encouraged to bring income and debt information. A workbook is included in the class fee. "Scams, Hustles, and Other Ways Seniors Get Taken" Tuesdays, Sept. 14 and 21; 4-6 p.m., Conference Room. $3. During the first session a panel of experts will present information and field questions about the various "rip-offs" people in our area have experienced. Panel members will include representatives from the police department, the legal and financial realms, as well as seniors with experience. This course is meant to be participatory, so students will be invited to share their experiences. This course is designed to help participants find ways to protect themselves. Registration forms are available at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center or can be mailed if requested from the Activities Department by telephone: 443-9747, ext. 269. Please register early; space is limited.
